Day 3 - Final Day

6th Sept 2009

Day 3 - Itinerary

Bike Challenge - 26 miles

How it happened

Up at 5.45 am - good nights kip ready for the final challenge 30 miles, 20 check points finish by the sea.

A quick trip to the Doctor to sort the toe, breakfast then before we know it we're back on the bikes.

The 41 teams go out in reverse order one minute apart. Last place first, first place last, so we're out second from last with less time to get to the finish.

No major problems - just grinding it out through beautiful countryside. A few more hills, lots more map reading which went surprisingly well.

The final challenge make Paul take a quick swim then its off to the finish line.

A great challenge very tough especially day 2 but we survived with only minor injuries which is good news.

The sun is shining as we grab a beer and wait for the scores.

Unfortunately the chess nuts had bad day and end up 41st overall.

We come in 2nd only 2 points behind the winners. Had we been offered that on day one we'd have jumped at it but right now we're all a little flat. So close ...

I'm proud of the team, we all had to show real grit and determination over the last three days, to carry on despite the pain. We should be proud of ourselves and let's not forget we've raised some money to help young people get their lives in order.

Great fun, what next???

Day 2.

5th Sept 2009

Day 2- Itinerary

Morning
Kayak Orienteering Challenge - 9 miles
Trek Orienteering Challenge - 10 miles

Afternoon
Bike  Orienteering Challenge 29 miles

How it Happened

Morning

Wake up at 6 take the tent down, hobble to breakfast then down to the lake for the 9 mile kayak challenge.

We get off to a good start, bag all but one of the check points and get back with a few minutes to spare and it still not even 10 o'clock.

Quick change out of our wet clothes. Now we have the 10 mile hike, Paul and I are hobbling like pensioners with old hips. Warrens walking on egg shells but lucky Johney's still bouncing like tigger.

We set off walking, there is no way we can run, but the muscles warm up and we tentatively break out into the occasional run.  We get to the far end of the lake but now we have to get back in 40 minutes or we'll be disqualified. We can barely walk let alone run but if we don't we'll loss all our points.

We start to run, I start to run, its time to dig deep!  I can't explain the pain shooting through my legs, knees, hips. But the mind set is, it hurts when you walk so why not run.

We ran all the way back and get in with 30 seconds to spare.

Afternoon

A quick lunch, the third change of clothes and its still not 1 pm then onto the bikes - we can do that but are our bodies shot?

No problem, totally different muscles, feel like a new man. We're off blasting up and down muddy tracks. We get to every check point and are first back to camp. Only five and half hours on the bike. The problem is walking after you get off the bike!

Off Warren and I go to the doctor, his feet are bad, I've got shin splints, lots of pain killers help.

The luxury of being first back is we get the hot showers to ourselves. Plenty of time to relax, eat, plan tomorrow's 30 mile bike challenge.

At 10 they finally announce the scores, some teams have only just got into camp. The Chess Nuts are no longer in last place - good news! There's hope. Matt and Mike actually had to carry Lucy on the hiking challenge.

We've moved up from 5th place and are now in second only 15 points behind the leaders. Can we do it tomorrow?

Just before we finally pass out I decide to remove the plaster from my little toe that is oozing something very unpleasant - big mistake!  All the skin and the nail comes off. I thought I was in pain this morning but it was nothing compared to this. My team mates find this hilarious. Luckily Paul does the decent thing and straps it up till the Doctor can take look in the morning.

Time to sleep.

Day One.

4th Sept 2009

Day 1 - Itinerary

Starts Dunster Castle

Morning

Team Hill Race - 13 miles

Afternoon

Navigation hike - 14 miles

Night camp Lake Wimbleball

How it happened

Morning

Up at dawn quick breakfast then of to the start. A fair but of faffing before we get to the beach for the start.

Chess Nuts arrive just in time having lost a wheel off one bike on route from their B&B then forget to pick up their lunch packs - not a promising start.

Dev Com Two set off running and keep up a good pace for the first 2 miles with only 4 teams ahead of us. We gradually hunt them down and get into 1st place after 5 miles. But the young bucks from Alpha, average age 25, take us on a steep down hill section. We keep them in our sight but they eventually stretch their lead up the final climb to the top. We keep well clear of the chasing pack and come in second - delighted couldn't have asked for a better start.

The afternoon is going to be a big ask for the old boys of Dev Com Two (average age 45) as we are beginning to creak!

Afternoon

We set off, still no sign of the Nuts.

15 checkpoints to reach for maximum points. We get to 13 but  we have had to dig deep, I don't thing I've ever been in so much pain running down the final hill. I will need a new knee and two new hips if this carries, on so will Paul! Warren's feet are a real mess blisters everywhere but John the new recruit keeps skipping along. He did a great job map reading.

A quick shower then we stretch our aching bodies and do a quick visit to the medics. Can they do anything for this old body? Keep stretching, take lots of pain killers, Oh and a couple of beers will help!

Nuts have had a disaster. Lucy has been told to stop by the medic at the top of the hill on the first race and they got completely lost in the 2nd race.

The positiosn are announced after dinner, my fears come true out of 41 team the Nuts are last! The lads a gutted but in good spirits, they get big cheer from everyone. It could so easily be any of us.

We are in 5th place but disappointed after such a good start but tomorrow is another day.

Pain killers and time for bed will be up at 6.

Challenge Eve.

3rd Sept 2009 9.15pm

The night before the big race, the excitement is building.

The same old questions rattle around your brain.  Am I fit enough? Are my Dev Com team mates fitter than me? Don't want to embarrass myself.

Are the Chess Nuts fit enough? They’d better not come last; Chess will never live it down!

It’s raining like mad in the north, felt like a hurricane hit the house last night. I hope it blows through by Friday morning.

Well here we go off on another mad cap adventure. Doesn't seem like a year ago we set off for the Costa Rica Challenge with Dev Com One - shame our old team mate Jan Gregory can't be with us. But the good news is we got someone younger, fitter and with a much better bike to take his place - John Kemp.

Warren Pryer Chess Sales Director, Paul Lawton Opal Chief Exec and myself make up the rest of Dev Com Two.

The only highlight rattling down the M6 and M5 to the B&B was to see our baby faced Opal account manager Ant Black in his mates fancy Audi with two biked badly lashed to the back.

The Chess Nuts team (Emma Bertouche, Melissa Wakefield, Lucy Cartwright, Mike Leighton and Matt Beswick)  looked like frightened rabbits in the Chess reception getting ready for the journey. None of them quite sure what they've let themselves into. They couldn't get all their bikes into their car so we've strapped Mel's onto the roof of our trusty Land Rover. It weighs more than all 4 of ours together - very worried they'll be slow.

Finally arrive. Off out for a few beers in Dunster - meet up with Opal and Cable and Wireless teams. All far too excited and talking a big game.

Let's see what tomorrow brings...

Time for bed

The Story So Far.

The Capgemini Wild UK Challenge for the Prince’s Trust is a 3 day event where David and his team mates from DevComTwo alongside The Chess Nuts team, will hike, bike,  kayak and trek across 100 miles of breathtaking wild moorland in Somerset and Devon. Sponsorship money raised by each team will go to The Prince’s Trust helping to turn disadvantaged young people’s lives around. Telecoms teams will take on Techies teams and we'll see who is the toughest.
