The daring feat was just one of a broader spectrum of events the team are organising as part of the 2008 Halliwells Corporate Challenge where teams from different companies around the North West compete to raise the most money over a specified time period.
The Halliwells corporate challenge is one of a number of ways in which Chess Telecom helps The Prince’s Trust give disadvantaged young people opportunities they never thought they’d have. In 2007 a team of Chess people took part in a similar challenge, raising over £7000 for The Prince’s Trust organising a programme of events that included getting local people into a spin by asking them to take pictures of themselves yo-yoing in unusual places!
In September 2008 Chess Telecom chief executive, David Pollock and sales director Warren Pryer joined an intrepid team to hike, bike, kayak and white water raft from coast to coast of Costa Rica. The team lived on a diet of beans and rice and David survived a spectacular crash, requiring him to have three stitches and treatment for concussion. The Chess Telecom team - DevComOne went on to win the entire challenge and raise over £40,000 for The Prince’s Trust.
Chess Telecom has also sponsored golf days organised by The Prince’s Trust raising over £38,000 and earlier this year the chesstelecom.com race was run at the charity’s race day at Haydock Park which raised over £15,000 for the charity.
As well as fundraising Chess Telecom also gives its people the opportunity to develop themselves by working as development coaches on The Prince’s Trust team programme – a 12 week course that trains groups of young people in the essential skills needed to get ahead in their careers. So far two Chess people have been through the programme and many more have volunteered to be the next.
As well spending a cold afternoon dangling from a bridge, the Chess Telecom Halliwells Corporate Challenge Team are also raising money by holding a raffle with prizes that include meals at Gusto and the Bubble Room and tickets to football matches. The winners will be drawn at a quiz night on Wednesday 26th November at Revolution in Wilmslow, where the team will also be auctioning a signed Manchester City and a signed Manchester United shirt.
“We developed our relationship with The Prince’s Trust for a number of reasons,” explains David Pollock, Chief Executive. “It has always been our aim for Chess to be known as an opportunities provider. As we have grown we have created more and more new jobs in the area and all Chess people are encouraged to grow and develop throughout their careers. The Prince’s Trust does a great deal to give disadvantaged young people with obvious potential the opportunity to overcome barriers, aim higher and make a positive contribution to society."
I am pleased to be part of the Prince’s Trust North West Development Committee in our role of raising quarter of a million pounds every year. It's about giving something back to the community - focusing on people and giving them opportunities to get into business and start work. I'm delighted that so many Chess people have jumped at the chance to get involved.”
